Family photography does not have to be boring. It does not have to be matching outfits (unless that is your thing!) and stiff poses. It doesn’t have to look like what everyone else’s family photos look like. Every family is different, and every session is therefore different. I am dedicated to creating images for my families that are uniquely them; I want the photos to feel and reflect who a family really is in whatever season of life they are in at the time we are making the images.

As I’m sitting down to write this post, I’ve come to realize that I have been to the beach quite a lot this season for sessions, and I am not sad about it. There have been so many nights when I’ve come home and had to rinse the sand from my feet with the hose on the side of the house and for some odd reason, that makes me happy. I mean, was it really summer if you didn’t get your feet covered in sand and spend some solid time at the beach?

This particular one was even more special in that the occasion for the session was to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the McCarthy son's parents, who are clearly still smitten with each other!

What is it that they always say about the weather in New England? If you don't like it, wait five minutes? That quote never felt more true than the evening of this beach session. When I left Portland to head to Ferry Beach in Scarborough, the sun was shining and it was a glorious summer day. The minute I crossed over the Scarborough line, poof!

Pine Point Beach Sunset Session | Maine Lifestyle Family Photographer | Stepheney Collins Photography

Here is a little known fact about me, but I didn’t grow up in Maine. I moved here in 2004 when I was in college, and after spending my first year living only 20 minutes from some pretty amazing beaches, I decided never to leave, despite that extremely cold and snowy winter. Summertime is my favorite season and I usually try to make as many days “beach days” as I can possibly can.
